Mural Magic Returns to Patea

Established in 1967, The Pātea Historical Society has around 60 enthusiastic volunteers keen to promote and preserve Pātea’s local history. Following the success of their 2024 industrial-themed mural, the society commissioned a second, this time on the side of the Pātea Pharmacy.

“Finding the funding to complete such a project is one of the biggest challenges and that took the better part of a year,” said Jacq Dwyer, President.

A grant from the Toi Foundation meant that the society could confidently book artist Dan Mills to design and paint the mural.

“We also wanted to include students from the Pātea Area School art department. Working with Dan gave the students a chance to experience firsthand what is involved in designing and painting a mural, including new techniques,” said Jacq.

“For example, for the image of the building, Dan cut out a 3D stencil and pinned it to the wall so the students could rub paint over it and see how easily you can produce a 3D image.

“The finished mural is 23m long and 4.5m high and showcases many local medicinal plants, including Koromiko, Kawakawa and some of the amazing sea sponges from the reefs near Pātea. There's a very realistic image of Howard Anderson, the Pātea pharmacist for 50 years. He was a patron of the Historical Society and gave so much to the district over many years.”

“As you drive into Pātea, the mural is very prominent. Over the years, I'd say thousands of people will enjoy this mural. People are stopping now, getting their photos taken next to it. Mt Taranaki is there, too. So, as they come around the corner, if the mountain's clouded over, they'll still see the same view in the mural.

“That's what I love about a mural; it's very inclusive. It's not aloof. Anyone can look at it and enjoy it, and it’s not tucked away in somebody's lounge or art gallery. It's really out there for everyone to see.”
