Where does Toi Foundation’s funding come from?
Toi Foundation owns and monitors key assets that generate funding for our grants.
We hold:
- A 100% shareholding in TSB Bank Limited
- A 66% controlling share in Fisher Funds Management Limited
Each year, TSB and Fisher Funds pay dividends to Toi Foundation, enabling us to invest back into our communities. By choosing TSB for banking or Fisher Funds for KiwiSaver, people contribute to this cycle of community support.
Who can apply for funding?
We fund community organisations, iwi and hapū, social enterprises, and individuals whose initiatives align with our focus areas.
To apply, you must be:
- A charity, incorporated society, school, or non-constituted group with a formal structure or
- An individual seeking an Individual Grant for competitive representation or development
Check Our Funding Approach page for full eligibility details.
What do you fund?
We support initiatives, programmes, events, and opportunities that align with one or more of our four focus areas:
- Helping children and young people thrive – Backing initiatives that improve wellbeing and education
- Protecting and regenerating the environment – Investing in conservation and sustainability
- Rangatiratanga – Empowering Māori aspirations – Supporting kaupapa Māori-led initiatives
- Increasing access to opportunities – Strengthening communities, fostering belonging, and building skills
What don’t you fund?
We don’t provide funding for:
- Retrospective costs (expenses already incurred)
- Political or lobby groups
- General fundraising activities
Each fund has its own requirements and exclusions. Check the Fund Policies on Our Funding Approach page for full details.
Special note for events – You can apply for upfront event planning and organisation costs, but applications must be submitted well in advance. Since we don’t fund retrospectively, we recommend applying at least six months before your event date to ensure your request is considered in time.

How are applications assessed?
Every funding request goes through a structured assessment process to determine its fit with our strategy and funding priorities.
We consider:
- Does the project align with one or more of our four focus areas?
- Does it meet a demonstrated community need, and is it unique or collaborative?
- Can the organisation effectively deliver on the proposed outcomes?
- Does the organisation have strong financial and governance practices?
- Have potential risks been considered (e.g. health and safety)?
- Is there a plan to evaluate and measure impact?
- Is there enough time to plan and deliver the initiative successfully?
- What other funding sources or income does the organisation have?
If we have any questions during the assessment, we’ll be in touch.
What are the key funding dates?
- Strengthening Community Fund – Applications open four times a year
- Strategic, Innovation & Investing for Impact Funds – Applications are accepted year-round
Check our Important Dates page for upcoming deadlines.
How long does it take to get a decision?
- Strengthening Community Fund – Up to 12 weeks after the closing date
- Strategic, Innovation & Investing for Impact Funds – Timing varies based on the complexity of the application
We’ll update you as your application progresses.
What happens if our application is successful?
If your funding request is approved:
- You’ll receive a notification letter outlining whether there are any conditions attached to the grant
- Grants are paid directly to the approved organisation or individual
- You may need to provide progress updates or final reporting
What happens if our application is declined?
Not all applications are successful. If your request isn’t approved, we encourage you to reach out for feedback and explore future opportunities.
Do we need to report on how we use the funding?
Yes. Depending on the grant type, you may be required to provide a Final Outcomes, Accountability or Impact Report showing how funds were used and what was achieved. Reporting helps us track the difference funding makes in our communities.
